If you have trees in your yard, there are many things you need to do to keep them healthy. One of these things is having them pruned. Unless you are experienced, you should hire a tree technician to do this for you. if you do this and do not prune the tree correctly, it will be damaged and may even die. Keep reading to learn more about pruning trees.

Why You Should Prune

There are many reasons you should have your trees pruned. For example, if you see a lot of dead branches on the tree, they should be pruned. If the tree's form is not correct, such as it looks larger on one side than the other or is not shaped well, pruning can take care of this.

If the crown, which is the very top of the tree, is full, it should be pruned. A full crown can cause a lot of problems. This is because sunlight cannot shine through the crown providing the tree with the sunlight it needs to grow well. Rain will also not get through a thick crown providing the tree with much-needed water. If you have plants near the tree these will also not receive enough sunlight and water.

Best Time to Prune Trees

If you only need to have light pruning to remove dead branches or branches that are diseased, you can have your trees pruned any time of the year. If you need heavy pruning, however, the best time is in the fall after the tree has quit budding or in the spring before it starts budding. Pruning when the tree is dormant is best as it causes less stress on the tree.

If the tree technician finds your tree has a disease, it should be pruned no matter what time of year it is. It is important to remove the diseased branches, or the disease can spread throughout the tree.

How Trees are Pruned

The first thing the tree technician will do is remove dead, diseased, dying, or weak branches from the crown. They will then work their way down removing the dead, dying, etc. branches. If there are long branches that are hanging near buildings, electrical lines, etc. these will be removed.

The tree technician will start pruning the shape of the tree if it is out of shape. They do this by removing a few branches at a time until the tree is shaped well. This will give the tree much more aesthetics.
